Overview

Assistive Technology promotes greater independence by enabling individuals to perform tasks that they previously struggled with or were unable to accomplish. Through a combination of lite-tech and high-tech tools, educators are able to provide students with increased access to the general education curriculum. This workshop will explore an array of lite-tech and high-tech tools that support legible handwriting, spelling, organization and sequencing of ideas, increased written output and strategies for completion of open-response questions.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to label and identify common written expression deficits.
  2. Participants will be able to compare three to four lite-tech Assistive Technology tools for written expression
  3. Participants will be able to compare three to four high-tech Assistive Technology tools for written expression

Joshua Dickson, M.S. Ed, Educational Consultant and Assistive Technology Specialist, is a well-rounded and accomplished educator who specializes in assistive technology, curriculum development, and inclusion support for individuals of all ages and abilities. Joshua's background is in autism spectrum and communication disorders. He has worked in the public school setting for the past five years, supporting students in grades Pre-K through 12 in both inclusive classrooms and substantially separate programs. As a District Integration and AT Specialist, Joshua successfully spearheaded a district-wide campaign to bring iPads into all classrooms. Throughout his career he has continued to facilitate professional development for school districts, community organizations, and families on an array of topics including behavioral supports and visual strategies, assistive technology, and differentiated instruction.

Currently, Joshua works with Commūnicāre, LLC where he provides professional development training, consultation, and evaluation services to individuals and school districts across Massachusetts.
