Apps and extensions can send just about anything they want to any server anywhere in the world. This session will answer some of the critical questions: What data is being collected? Where is the data stored? What rules control how that data is handled? What if a parent requested all of the data held by your technology vendors? We will discuss criteria to assist with selection of apps and extensions that meet requirements from FERPA and COPPA as well as highlight cloud-based tools Co:Writer and Snap&Read Universal from Don Johnston that responsibly collect and protect student data.

Learning Objectives

  1. Become familiar with the kind of data that can be collected and how it can be used to better inform instruction and technology use
  2. Understand the importance of student privacy and the risks that exist
  3. Learn what questions to ask of your software and technology providers to ensure your students are protected
