The ability to write and express oneself is a necessity in a school environment and a lifelong skill. Each year many students become disengaged with the writing process due to multiple factors. This session will present a continuum of tools to support writing, along with methods to empower and encourage students to write. This fast-paced presentation will look at assessment, access, and implementation for student achievement when accessing low-tech to high-tech software, hardware, Web 2.0 sites and apps that help students move from reluctant writers to authors.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify 3 "roadblocks" that can be present along with analyzing 3 potential solutions.
  2. Describe 2-3 strategies that can be used immediately to increase written output within the classroom setting.
  3. Identify 2 low technology resources and 2 high technology resources which will maximize independence in writing.

Katherine Sween has been in OTR for 27 years. She has worked with students of all ages and disabilities in both school systems, and various organizations located in Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. She has been a member of the Assistive Technology Team in the School District of Janesville for 10 years as well as a member of the district's Autism Support Team. She has been a co-presenter at various conferences including; Technology Conference for Special Education, AT Across the Lifespan, Wisconsin Statewide School-Based OT/PT Conference, Wisconsin Occupational Therapy Association State Conference, and ATIA 2017 and 2018. Katherine has also co-authored Writing Composition Part I and Writing Composition Part II for ATIM (Assistive Technology Internet Modules).

Debra Krausse

Deb Krausse has been an OTR in the School District of Janesville for the past 23 years, providing a leadership role as the Instructional Manager for the past 12 years. She has worked with students from 3 through 21 throughout the district and with community agencies to help support student achievement. Deb has been an active member of the Assistive Technology Team and the Janesville Autism Support Team for the past 15 years, providing direct services, consultation and training to support student and staff development. She has also been a strong advocate in supporting Fieldwork students from a variety of Vocational and Collegiate Schools. Deb and Kathy share an interest in presenting district wide trainings in the area of Sensory Processing, Autism and Assistive Technology, expanding their voice in presenting to community, statewide and national venues including AT Across the Lifespan, Wisconsin Occupational Therapy Association Statewide Conference and the Assistive Technology Industry Association National Conference in 2018.
