Social-emotional learning (SEL) involves the acquisition of skills needed to understand and manage social interactions at home, at school, and in the community. For most children, these skills are acquired incidentally. For individuals with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities, very often explicit teaching of these skills is required. The Social Express is an interactive learning program, aligned with state and common core standards, that provides professionals with the tools needed to implement proven SEL instruction in any setting. This session will share the research and rationale that informed the development of this program, and will demonstrate its implementation.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to describe the benefits of explicit instruction in social-emotional learning (SEL) for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
  2. Particpants will be able to discuss the advantages of interactive learning and video-modeling for interventions addressing social-emotional learning.
  3. Particpants will be able to identify 6 target SEL skills addressed by The Social Express program that lead to understanding and managing emotions.
