In part one of this three-part webinar series, we’ll introduce the Communication Matrix, an online tool to assess the communication skills of students with complex communication needs. Developed by Charity Rowland and Oregon Health Sciences University, the free, online matrix yields a detailed description of the expressive communication skills of any individual functioning at or below the two-year level. In addition to the Matrix itself, we will examine supplemental materials and options that can be accessed from the website at .

Learning Objectives

  1. 1. Participants will be able to describe the scope and appropriate use of the Communication Matrix.
  2. 2. Participants will be able to complete a communication matrix using the online assessment tool.
  3. 3. Participants will be able to identify reasons why and when they might use the supplemental materials available through the Communication Matrix site after completing a Matrix for an individual with complex communication needs.

Gayl Bowser, M.S, currently works as an independent consultant and is an adjunct faculty member for the Wyoming Institute for Disabilities (WIND) at the University of Wyoming. Her work focuses on the creation of service systems that encourage the integration of technology into educational programs for students with disabilities. Formerly the Coordinator of the Oregon Technology Access Program (OTAP) and the State of Oregon’s Specialist in Assistive Technology, Gayl currently provides assistive technology consultation, training and technical assistance throughout the United States and internationally. Gayl has co-authored numerous publications about assistive technology services including Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology, Education Tech Points: A Framework for Assistive Technology and Assistive Technology Pointers for Parents and Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology: A comprehensive guide to assistive technology services.
