Overview

Scanning using one or two switches allows people with severe physical impairments to use a computer or augmentative communication device. Unfortunately, switch use can be challenging, and switch scanning is an inherently slow method of communication. This two-part series describes the tools and principles to: 1) identify challenges a user may be facing with their switch or scanning system, and 2) recommend and implement adjustments to enhance the user’s performance. Part 1 focuses on identifying the challenges with switch use and scanning, and presents approaches for collecting data that can evaluate the extent of those challenges for a given individual.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will understand current findings regarding user performance with ability switches and how to use those findings as a context for interpreting data from a given individual.
  2. Participants will understand current findings regarding text entry with switch scanning and how to use those findings as a context for interpreting data from a given individual.
  3. Participants will be able to video an individual using their switch and scanning system and analyze it for basic performance data.
  4. Participants will be able to use 2 software tools that collect and report data on an individual’s switch and scanning use.
