Learn why and how to use personal stories/narratives with students who communicate through AAC, including switch-users. Build concepts about self while working on early literacy/communication skills. Personal core can reinforce universal core through transitional texts with repeated lines (e.g., predictable charts). Learn how to use recipes to make Tarheel Reader stories accessible to all students. Import these stories into Pictello and re-read offline using higher quality voices. Import photos/PDFs/PPTs into Explain Everything and use screencasting tools to visually magnify elements or to add recordings. Export Explain Everything stories as videos and add as a button action in GoTalkNOW or TouchChat.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to define the terms universal core and personal core.
  2. Participants will be able to list at least 3 supports that can help students participate in writing/telling personal stories.
  3. Participants will describe the steps for creating videos in Explain Everything that add visual cues to personal stories.
  4. Participants will be able to list at least 3 ways to share personal stories.
