In part one of this three-part webinar series, we will introduce the Communication Matrix, an online tool to assess the communication skills of students with complex communication needs.  Developed by Charity Rowland of Oregon Health Sciences University, the free, online Matrix yields a detailed description of the expressive communication skills of any individual functioning at or below the two-year expressive level.  We will meet our case study student and discover how the Communication Matrix can be used to assess Morgan’s communication behaviors and skills.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to describe the Communication Matrix online assessment tool and locate it on the web.
  2. Participants will be able to identify the four communication functions addressed by the communication matrix.
  3. Participants will be able to analyze a matrix assessment profile for an individual student to describe the student’s communicative function.


Emily Quinn

Oregon Health Sciences University
Emily Quinn is currently a speech-language pathologist and graduate student at Vanderbilt University studying special education and human development. Working at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC and Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Portland Oregon, Emily has helped children with complex communication needs improve their language and communication skills. Her research and clinical interests include parent-implemented language interventions and augmentative and alternative communication.

Alexandria Cook

Alexandria Cook is a research assistant for the Communication Matrix projects. Her research interest include speech and language, beginning communicators, cultural differences in special education, and motivation. She is committed offering research and tools to the largest audience (including internationally and rurally) to support individuals with complex communication needs.
