Weaving the Threads of Communication

This session will explore the use of Core vocabulary to create customized, functional and interactive communication systems. The research basis for designing communication systems for individuals with complex communication needs will be demonstrated. A wide variety of designs will be showcased representing the individual nature of each system.

Marsye W. Kaplan, MS, CCC-SLP, ATP, Baltimore County Public Schools

Marsye has worked in the field of Special Education for 30 years as a speech language pathologist and more recently as an assistive technology specialist. She coordinates and supervises the identification of students requiring assistive technology, service delivery and staff development related to integrating technology for students with special needs into the classroom. In addition to teaching at Johns Hopkins and Towson Universities, she presents locally, statewide and nationally on a wide range of topics. Marsye has been called upon to consult on local, statewide and national issues related to assistive technology and Universal Design for Learning. Marsye has published articles in local and national journals. Marsye was named Teacher of the Year 2008 by the Baltimore County Commission on Disabilities.
